It's a living thread that connects history, nature, and culture. For centuries, indigenous communities have used this cotton to craft garments and everyday items, valuing its natural hues that eliminate the need for dyeing. However, as synthetic fabrics and industrialized farming practices took over, this remarkable cotton faced near extinction.Today, efforts to preserve wild cotton in Peru are flourishing. Organizations, women’s associations, and local farmers have come together to conserve these native plants, providing long-term livelihoods for rural communities while ensuring the cotton’s survival.The Wild Cotton Project: Striving for More Sustainable Cotton Farming in PeruIn 1994, the Peruvian government launched a program to replace coca leaf plantations in the rainforest with responsible crops. This initiative ignited interest in the naturally coloured cotton that grows wild in the region. A dedicated group of farmers, supported by our ethical clothing manufacturer, began to cultivate and certify this exceptional cotton.The hard work of these farmers not only helped revive Peru’s wild cotton but also opened the door to international markets, including Japan and Europe. Today, the Wild Cotton Project collaborates with 71 farming families, ensuring the preservation of this heritage crop while promoting eco-friendly agricultural practices.Empowering Women through Cotton ConservationAcross Peru, women’s associations have played a pivotal role in the revival of wild cotton. These resilient women have overcome legal restrictions, lack of resources, and societal barriers to protect traditional farming methods and foster economic independence.By safeguarding native cotton species, these women are demonstrating the powerful connection between cultural heritage and more sustainable agricultural practices.
