However, as synthetic fabrics and industrialized farming practices took over, this remarkable cotton faced near extinction.Today, efforts to preserve wild cotton in Peru are flourishing. Organizations, women’s associations, and local farmers have come together to conserve these native plants, providing long-term livelihoods for rural communities while ensuring the cotton’s survival.The Wild Cotton Project: Striving for More Sustainable Cotton Farming in PeruIn 1994, the Peruvian government launched a program to replace coca leaf plantations in the rainforest with responsible crops.
